Retrospective

Retrospective (Latin retrospectare " look back " ) refers to a review in general.

In the visual arts, the retrospective is an art exhibition, which gives an overview of one or more creative phases, a specific aspect (eg a drawing retrospective ) or the complete works of an artist. Instead of showing only the most recent works, the retrospective establishes a context to other previous works. Sometimes it also gives rise to a critical re-evaluation.

In the area of the film, it refers to the widest possible series on the work of a film director, film actor, other filmmakers to film the art of a particular period or a particular genre. Retrospectives are often part of a film festival (there are at the Berlinale every year a retrospective ). In many local cinemas are retrospectives part of the program.

Catherine David, the artistic director of documenta X ( 1997) used the term retro perspective as a description of their approach. In connection with the theme " Looking Back to the Future " was meant to put the issue in relation to the last documenta exhibitions and put them in the same " tradition of innovation " to.
