Rettbergsaue

The Rettbergsaue (pronounced Rettbergs floodplain ) is a natural Wiesbaden Rhine island, which lies between the main fairway of the Rhine in the north and in the south Wachsbleicharm in which runs the border between Hesse and Rhineland- Palatinate. The Rettbergsaue is about 3100 meters long and up to 400 meters wide and, with 68 hectares of the largest islands that are freely flowing around both sides of the Rhine. For the traffic on the motorway 643 Aue is spanned by the Schiersteiner bridge. On the east side of the bridge there is a cycle and walkway with stairs down to the island. This stairway is, however, from 2013 to in 2019 are not available, as this area is blocked in the context of the construction of Schiersteiner bridge to the public.

The island existed until the mid-19th century, in two parts, the Biebricher and the Schiersteiner Wörth. The western part, named in Late Medieval Carthusian Aue, acquired in 1832 their namesake, Baron Carl von Rettberg. The Nassau lieutenant and adjutant of the Duke took over the island from Nassau State and operated a cattle and horse breeding. For financial reasons, he had to return a few years later at Nassau possession.

The island opposite the Biebrich Palace is consisted largely with trees and has a rich bird and plant life. For example, in 1997 19 occupied nests of the Black Kite were counted. Approximately 90 % of the island are protected. Part of the land is used for agriculture.

At the west end, near two Altrheinarme, written in 1914, the beach Schier stone on the north shore in 1921, the beach Biebrich. Due to the heavy pollution of the Rhine, both institutions were closed in 1962. Today they serve as a recreational area where it can be isolated and use the white sandy beaches. Bathing is officially banned, although the water was now at normal water level, excluding accrued at high water contamination, again suitable for bathing. By Hundeverbot and away from the traffic the Rettbergsaue is with her large children's playground, a football and a barbecue area, the island - an open-air café bowling alley and other attractions, especially for families with children, a popular recreational area. The two recreational area can be reached via the stairs from the Schiersteiner bridge. In the summer season runs the passenger ferry Tamara, the stores in Wiesbaden- Biebrich in Schiersteiner harbor and the River Rhine. The rest of the island is inaccessible to strangers.

On 23-24. October 2009 was dredged by THW Wiesbaden channel. Purpose of the action is the liberation of the side of fetid mud and the revival of the lido.
