Rettel

Rettel is a commune with 737 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Moselle in the Lorraine region. It belongs to the district of Thionville -Est and Canton Sierck- les- Bains.

Geography

Rettel lies about 15 kilometers northeast of Thionville in the Moselle at an altitude 145-300 m above sea level. The municipality covers 6.89 km ².

History

The town was first mentioned in 620 as Valla Rotovallum. 800 was founded by a sister of Charlemagne, a Benedictine convent, where she is said to have also spent her last years. But already in the 9th century, the monastery is a Men's Monastery, a Benedictine abbey.

In 1431, the abbey was converted into a Carthusian monastery. In the 2nd quarter of the 18th century the monastery modeled after the Charterhouse of Bosserville was completely rebuilt. After the abolition of the French Revolution, the monastery was canceled.

Together with Lorraine falls Rettel in 1661 to France.

From the monastery Rettel only a few have been preserved. In the village there is still a late Gothic house (" Maison de la Dîme " ) in typical region of Lorraine and Metz forms.
