Retznei is a small municipality with 421 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in the district of Leibnitz in Styria. On 1 January 2015 it is affiliated to the wine route and honor Hausen in the Styrian municipality structural reform with the communities Bergshausen, ratchet, the new community will be called Ehrenhausen on the wine route.

Geography

Retznei lies on the right bank of the Mur below the Sulmmündung about 6 km southeast of Leibnitz.

History and Archaeology

As an archaeological site Retznei has been known since the late 19th century, were carried out as the first excavations by the numismatist Friedrich Pichler. Further studies, in which first the location of the old excavation could be located have occurred in the years 2005 to 2010.

First results of these excavations were published in individual articles. Thus, the place was already inhabited in the Middle Bronze Age. From the subsequent Hallstatt period are no finds. An extended spätlatènezeitliche settlement, which may perhaps be called the homestead group was located on the same property. In the Roman Empire several wings of the building were built. At least two bath buildings date from this period, as well as luxurious equipped with wall paintings and mosaics rooms. A construction is called the Nymphaeum and hired for this reason, we consider whether it is not a private villa in the vicinity of the town Flavia Solva, but a source sanctuary could act with attached thermal complex in the entire system to. Also a found during the excavations of the 19th century altar points in this direction.

The abolition of the manorial system was carried out in 1848., The local church as an autonomous body was established in 1850. After the annexation of Austria in 1938 the congregation to Reichsgau Styria came from 1945 to 1955 it was part of the British zone of occupation in Austria.

Economy and infrastructure

Retznei lives mainly from agriculture. Important producing goods are: grapes, fruit ( apple juice, brandy ), pumpkins and beans. Numerous wines come from this region, which have won awards at wine tastings. The community Retznei is also known for good and winning brandies.

Quarry Retznei

The most important employer is the company Lafarge Perlmooser, one of the world's largest cement manufacturer. The company operates a large quarry, which is divided in two outcrops. The elder for more than 30 years in operation, but is reclaimed at the time and converted into a large pond. The second fraction is in operation only a few years.

The processing is done in the local factory. The raw material is first crushed ( by blowing ) in a crusher plant and transported via conveyor belts to the ball mills. Then one is transported to a stockpile. By chemical composition ( composition) of the raw material is mixed according to the desired target composition and burned in a rotary kiln to form cement.

The quarry is known for its fossils and mineral wealth. Found calcite (yellow, clear, milky, grown in different crystal forms, Druze, with fossils ), pyrite - marcasite ( tubers, filled fossils, partly crystal aggregates ), shark teeth ( puffer fish, chewing plates, Megalodon Cacarodon teeth (up to about 13 cm in size ) crab tank (whole crabs, scissors, tanks ), shell cores ( with and without preservation of the shell, piddock ), sea urchins ( Clypeaster, ski -Caster ).
