Rev limiter

A rev limiter is an automated technical means on internal combustion engines or engines which counteracts reaching an upper limit speed, a further increase in speed.

Purpose

A speed limitation is provided when the risk of mechanical damage at a critical maximum speed is exceeded threatened, but also to be expected with increased wear or maintain optimum operating conditions.

In automotive engineering, in some manufacturers, such as Daimler (Mercedes), installed additionally still a Standdrehzahlbegrenzer which additionally limits the engine speed when the vehicle in order to avoid (eg slippage of the clutch) or deliberate bang -offs possible damage to the drive train or motor through a driver errors.

Diesel engines are generally equipped with a speed limitation, since with mechanical injection without additional control, the injected amount of fuel with the engine speed increases ( leakage losses in the injection sink ). Gasoline engines need not in all cases necessarily a speed limitation, since the intake and flow losses have throttling at high speeds.

Execution

Otto engines, both the ignition and the fuel supply can be interrupted.
