Revelstoke Dam

The Revelstoke Dam is a large dam with a hydroelectric plant on the Columbia River and is located five kilometers north of Revelstoke in the Canadian province of British Columbia. The power plant was completed in 1984 and has a nominal generator power of 1843 MW. It is one of the largest and most modern hydroelectric power plants in North America. The reservoir behind the shut-off means Lake Revelstoke. The dam is operated by BC Hydro.

The Columbia River Treaty

The construction of the power plant is a contract signed in 1964 between the United States ( where the current is supplied ) and Canada based (the " Columbia River Treaty" ). The Revelstoke Dam is Canada's second hydroelectric project on the Columbia River and is one of four dams in British Columbia that regulate the outflow of Columbia. The other three are Mica, Hugh Keenleyside and Duncan. You all have been established under the Treaty of 1964; According to another source Revelstoke is not covered by the contract. The contract also provides for the flood control and support the potential for the use of water power in the United States. The dam is sized for tidal waves that could arise from potential landslides and rockfalls.

The Absperrbauwerke

The dam has a shut-off a 175 m high concrete gravity dam in the Little Dalles Canyon and in addition a 122-meter Erdschüttdamm on the west bank of the river.

The power plant

The power house is located directly below the dam. It has four 16 -kV generators, each with capacity of 460.75 MW, which have been in operation since 1984. The source connected to the 500 kV power grid system is designed for the operation of a maximum of six turbines, the fifth turbine is predicted by the operator to go into operation in early 2011. The instantaneous power rating is thus 1843 MW; it could be increased to 2764.5 MW. The alternative indicated power from 1980 megawatts probably refers to the performance of the turbines. After the new turbine was installed, the performance increased according to official figures to 2480 MW. The machines are among the largest in existence. The power house is 213 m long, 50 m wide and 60 m high. The power plant provides visitors with an information center about the history of the dam with lots of information about the structure and mode of action. Furthermore, organized tours, but not allow to enter the turbine hall.

The reservoir

The reservoir is in a northerly direction 135 km from Mica Dam. He is below Mica at " 882 miles ", is about 130 km long and extends to the Mica Dam approach. Both dam be operated together in a network. Three-quarters of the inflow regulated outflows of Mica, and therefore operates the Revelstoke power plant as a Laufwasserkraftwerk and less than Power Station. The normal water level changes in the reservoir are only 4.5 meters.
