Revillagigedo Island

Revillagigedo Iceland is in southeastern Alaska ( Panhandle ), this island in the Alexander Archipelago in the Pacific Ocean. The island is about 2754 km ², 89 km long and up to 48 km wide. It belongs administratively to the Ketchikan Gateway Borough. Highest elevation is 1400 m high Mount Reid in uninhabited northeast of the island.

It is separated by the Clarence Strait from the Prince of Wales Island to the west and by the Behm Canal to the east of mainland Alaska. Located on the southern tip between Revillagigedo and Anette Iceland the Revillagigedo Channel and Nichols Passage.

The island was discovered in the 18th century by Russian, British and Spanish navigators and later named after Juan Vicente de Güemes Pacheco y Padilla, Conde de Revillagigedo II, the 53rd viceroy of New Spain.

On the island live about 13,950 inhabitants, mainly in the cities of Ketchikan and Saxman, and Ward Cove in the village on the southwest coast. The inhabitants live primarily from fishing, timber harvesting and tourism.
