Revolt of the Lash

A Revolta da Chibata ( The Revolt of the Whip ) was an uprising mainly dark-skinned Brazilian sailors of the Brazilian Navy in November 1910. Than 2,000 sailors rebelled against the punishment with physical violence by their light-skinned supervisor, by threatening to bomb the city. The uprising was planned for over two years and was under the guidance of the mariner João Cândido Felisberto ( Born June 24, 1880, reinf December 6, 1969 ) conducted by the crews of four large warships. The revolt came from the battleship Minas Geraes ( Minas Geraes - class) and spread to her sister ship São Paulo, the old coastal battleship Deodoro and the cruiser Bahia over.

The rebels demanded the abolition of punishment by flogging, improving food and amnesty for mutineers. It culminated in a street fight that was going on until November 27, 1910 from 22 in the Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro and were killed during the six officers, including Joao Batista das Neves, the commander of the battleship Minas Geraes. The situation was resolved within a week by the government yielded to the demands of the rebels and then on 26 November, the ships were transferred back to the Navy. However, the government broke the promise amnesty on 28 with a decree, which allowed the Minister of the Navy to dismiss former rebels for disobedience of the Navy. Many were then imprisoned and tortured.
