Rex Beach

Rex Ellingwood Beach ( born September 1, 1877 in Atwood, Antrim County, Michigan, † December 7, 1949 in Sebring, Florida) was an American lawyer, writer, playwright and water polo player.

Life

Rex Beach came in Atwood, Antrim County, Michigan, the son of a farmer and a teacher to the world. He watched as his older brothers a law career, before he came to Alaska in the wake of the Klondike Gold Rush. After five years of unsuccessful prospecting and a drawn-out studies, he devoted himself to a literary career.

In 1904 he participated at the Olympic Games in St. Louis at the local water polo tournament and won a silver medal with the team of Chicago Athletic Association.

His first novel, The Spoilers appeared in 1906 and was based in part on a real scandal mine approvals. The main female character Cherry Malotte is Julia Bulette modeled.

The Spoilers became a bestseller in 1906. Honorable reviews referred to him as " Victor Hugo of the North".
