Reykjavík Cathedral

The Cathedral of Reykjavík ( Isl Dómkirkja ) is right next to the Parliament building on Austurvöllur in the center of the old capital of Iceland and is the seat of the Lutheran bishop of Iceland, as well as parish church in the downtown community. History

The predecessor of the current cathedral was built in the years 1787 to 1796, near the site of the old church, which was in the Aðalstræti. Description

The baptismal font was created by Albert Thorvaldsen and is considered a work of art. It was created in 1827 in Rome and came in 1839 in the cathedral. The pulpit in the new Baroque style is a work of art by the architect of the church, Winstrup, who also created the frame of the altarpiece.

The organ was built in Berlin by Karl Schuke and consecrated in 1985. It has 3 manuals, pedal, and has 31 stops. The disposition made ​​of the cathedral organist Marteinn H. Fridriksson, the prospectus, the architect drew Thor Steinn Gunnarsson.

The Silver Chalice and the patina was created in 1784 by Sigurdur Thorsteinsson in Copenhagen and are a donation of businessman JC Sunckenberg. The crucifix and candlesticks donated pastor Jón Auduns, the Bible was donated by a lawyer and church council Benedict Blöndal.
