Rezső Sugár

Rezső Sugár ( born October 9, 1919 in Budapest, † September 22, 1988 in Budapest) was a Hungarian composer.

Sugár studied 1937-1942 at the Music Academy of Budapest with Zoltán Kodály. From 1949 to 1968 he taught at the Budapest Conservatory, then to 1979 at the Academy of Music.

He became known for the oratorio Hunyadi ( 1949-52 ) for soloists, chorus and orchestra. Was very successful in his oratorio Hungary Höse enek ( heroic song, 1952) by patriotic verses of József Romhányi. Furthermore composed inter alia Sugár a Sinfonietta for String Orchestra, a concerto in memoriam Béla Bartók, a Sinfonia a variazioni, Metamorfosi for orchestra, a partita, the oratory of Savonarola, chamber music and piano pieces.

Sugár in 1953 awarded the Erkel Prize and in 1954 the Kossuth Prize. In 1976 he was Merited Artist of the Hungarian People's Republic.
