Rhayader

Rhayader ( Welsh: Rhaeadr Gwy, which means waterfall on the Wye ) is a small town (2,000 inhabitants) in the county of Radnorshire in Mid Wales, United Kingdom in the valley of the River Wye.

The clock tower in the center was an important station on the road from Aberystwyth to London in the 19th century.

History

The place was inhabited in the Bronze Age. 1177 here by Lord Rhys of Deheubarth a castle was built, which was hotly contested in the further and has already been burnt down in 1231. The Rebecca Riots, peasant uprisings against the high taxes and falling producer prices, shook the place 1839-1844.

Tourism

Tourist Rhayader is interesting as a starting point for trips into the scenic Elan Valley, the valley of the River Elan with dams and an adventurous one-lane road to Devil 's Bridge. On the outskirts of Rhayader there in Gingrin Farm is a nationally unique center for the people living here red kites.
