Rheden

( Listen? / I ) rheden is a Dutch municipality of the province of Gelderland and had on 1 January 2013, according to the CBS 43 665 inhabitants. The municipality covers an area of ​​84.29 km ², of which 22 km ² water and 31 kms ² of forest.

Location and economic

The community forms the southeastern edge of the wooded Veluwe area in between Arnhem landscape in the south and hum in the Northeast. Velp, Rheden and decoding have stations on the railway line Arnhem - Zutphen; only in Dieren also keep some express trains. Runs between Arnhem and decoding, along the IJssels a highway. Dieren is located on the IJsselmeer, but has no major port. De Steeg has a marina. In the vicinity there are 3 campsites:

  • Dorado Beach
  • IJsselstrand
  • Zwarte Schaar

Main source of income is tourism. In the east there is also agriculture ( dairy farming ) along the IJssels. Rheden has some brick factories, and in De Steeg, there was until recently a large steel mill (2002 closed). In decoding is the bicycle factory the well known company Gazelle. There are also, especially in decoding and between Velp and Arnhem much small businesses.

History

Rheden was called in the Middle Ages Rheton. This means that place where Reeds growing. In the 16th century Rheden with Dieren ( Diederen ) was a Schult office jurisdiction of a magistrate. This " schout " was also chief judge and police officer in these troubled times. In the 19th century Velp grew strongly, by its proximity to the administrative center of Arnhem and by attracting more or less wealthy retirees, including from The Hague. Later, even middle class citizens and commuters settled. Dieren was a modest industrial center, which until about 1960 had a waterway and railway connection with Apeldoorn.

Attractions

  • In Rheden you can enter the Natural Park Veluwezoom. Hiking and cycling are possible here. The highest point of the Veluwe, near the simple, non-reachable by car, restaurant Carolinahoeve, here is (110 meters above sea level).
