The Rhine Bahn AG (formerly Rhenish Railway Company Ltd ) operates the local public transport in the cities of Dusseldorf and sea bush as well as in many parts of the district of Mettmann. There are currently seven rail lines (partly underground), operated 11 tram lines and 91 bus lines. The rail network extends to Neuss, Krefeld, Duisburg and Ratingen. It belongs to the transport association Rhein- Ruhr at, has a rail network of approximately 342 km of track and carries over 214 million passengers per year.

Over the years, the term Rheinbahn naturalized more and more a place Rhenish Railway Company. The wearing of the Board of the Company in 2005 bill and decided to rename in the Rhine Bahn AG.

Rail

Rheinbahn operates seven rail lines in Dusseldorf. The mid-1970s began with the construction in the Fischer Road. The first route was opened in 1981 with a tunnel and two underground stations north of downtown. The downtown tunnel went into operation in 1988. This now bundled all new rail lines on a common route between two subway stations Heinrich -Heine -Allee and Dusseldorf Hbf Further openings were made in 1993 with a tunnel section in Eller and 2002 with another in Oberbilk. Since 2007 is built on another tunnel in Düsseldorf city center, he should take another three light rail lines on the so-called Wehrhahnlinie 2014.

Tram

In Dusseldorf, August 30, 2010, at 11 tram lines, all of which are operated by the Rhine railway. The history of Düsseldorf tram goes back to the year 1876, when the first horse-drawn railway ran through Dusseldorf. However, these were not operated by the Rhine railway. This was only made possible with its founding on February 21, in Krefeld and on March 10, 1896 in Dusseldorf by entrepreneur Henry Lueg.

Regional Transport

Through its participation in the trans regio German regional train GmbH Rheinbahn was for a time also active in regional transport business.

However, on 30 June 2011, the Supervisory Board decided to sell the shares in Transregio 24.9 % of the EuRailCo GmbH, a subsidiary of the French company Veolia. By his own admission Rheinbahn took this step as part of the new EU Regulation 1370 as it seeks to take advantage of the possibility of direct award. Under this scheme activities are not provided outside the traditional service area.

Ship operation until 1993

Until 1993 was conducted by the Rheinbahn also ship operating in regular service on the Rhine. Particular importance was the ferry after the war from 1945. Operation of the ship Rheinbahn was a total of 95 years. This operation, most recently on behalf of the city of Dusseldorf, was discontinued in 1993, because the city was not ready, the resulting deficits to carry on. When setting the ship operation, the existing four ships were sold to the company Küffner who also took over the staff and facilities of the Steiger Rheinbahn.
