The Rheinwaldhorn, Italian accordingly Adula or Pizzo del Cadabi, Romansh Piz Piz Valrain or Valragn or Pez Valrein is, with 3'402, 2 m above sea level. M. the highest mountain of geographically further Adula Alps. Other uncommon names today were Rheinwald tip Snowhorn Adulahorn and Moschelhorn. Both Tacitus and Strabo and Ptolemy mention " ADULA MONS ", but it is unclear whether here today Adula group is meant, or the name at that time still had a more wide-ranging significance.

Geography

The summit is on the border between the cantons of Ticino and Graubünden in the Lepontine Alps, is the highest peak of Ticino. The cantonal border runs along the north ridge and the south-east.

First ascent

In June 1789 Father Placidus a Spescha succeeded from the monastery of Disentis with the Rheinwaldhorn one of the first detectable ascents of over 3000 meters high mountain in the Alps. The ascent was made by the Zapportseite from the north ridge.

The term Adula

In German, the term Adula as well as in Claudius Ptolemy always denotes the whole territory, see Adula Alps and Adula group. Since the Rheinwaldhorn summit but from afar is the highest point visible as a free-standing mountain peaks, its deputy role for the whole massif as a geographical landmark - and thus the common in the Italian language name Adula for retail summit - of course. Historically, the Adula group as well as the southeast of the group situated, relatively late, named after the Saint Bernard San Bernardino Pass referred to as bird or bird mountain. Ascent routes

Glacier at Rheinwaldhorn

The summit is framed in W, N, and O from the glaciers Vadrecc di Bresciana, the torn Läntagletscher and the smaller glacier paradise. The Vadrecc di Bresciana is the largest glacier in the Ticino, but decreases sharply; 2000-2010 was the loss of length 244 meters at an estimated total length of 2.4 km.

National park

The Rheinwaldhorn to be part of the in the planning Adula. The summit would then belong to the core zone of the park.
