History

Creation and development to 1998

The Rhenus Transport GmbH was founded on November 13, 1912 as a joint venture of the Baden Actiengesellschaft for Rhine navigation and sea transportation and the Rheinschiffahrts Actiengesellschaft. The name is the Latin name of the river Rhine. The company's headquarters was in Frankfurt am Main. It stores were built in Mannheim, Mainz, Antwerp and Rotterdam. The business purpose was the Rhine.

Against the backdrop of the global economic crisis in 1929 included the Badische Actiengesellschaft that Rheinschiffahrts Actiengesellschaft, along the Rhenus and other companies to a community of interest. 1934 acquired the Hibernia Mining Company, a subsidiary of VEBA, the majority shareholder of the interest group.

With the restructuring of VEBA 1969 Rhenus was acquired by Hugo Stinnes AG. The inland shipping activities were bundled to Duisburg in the Fendel - Stinnes AG shipping. The Rhenus Society for shipping, freight forwarding and warehousing was converted to the Rhenus AG, headquartered in Mannheim.

Another name change took place in 1976 in the formation of a community of interests of Rhenus AG, Fendel - Stinnes AG and shipping Westphalian Transport AG ( WTAG ). The new company was now called Rhenus AG WTAG and had its headquarters in Dortmund. At the same time, the subsidiary CCS Combined Container Service GmbH & Co. KG was founded. Merged in 1984 WTAG AG and Rhenus AG WTAG Rhenus AG. Rhenus AG now had 100 locations in Germany and another 80 abroad.

As part of the acquisition of Schenker AG, Stinnes AG 1991 Rhenus Weichelt AG was merged with Schenker Euro Cargo AG and the tasks of the Rhenus Transport International AG were taken over by the newly established Schenker International AG. The Rhenus AG stock and envelope retained its business and changed its name again under Rhenus AG.

Rhenus AG strengthened its logistics division in 1993 by the construction of a logistics center with 60,000 m² of warehouse space in Berlin. Other centers followed in Langgoens, casting, Mannheim, Stuttgart, Hanover and Prague.

In order to bundle all logistics activities of the Stinnes Group Schenker - Rhenus AG was formed in 1996. In it, the three divisions formed in 1991 were pooled. Prior to the inland waterway activities of all Stinnes subsidiary had been bundled in the RS PartnerShip and integrated together with the Midgard German maritime AG in the Rhenus Group.

Development since 1998

Rhenus AG & Co. KG was acquired by the Rethmann AG since 1998 and came as a complete provider of logistics services. Chairman was Dr. Hermann Niehues. In subsequent years, the Rhenus AG expanded its portfolio of logistics centers in Europe and bought various companies in the logistics industry.

A streamlining the corporate structure was undertaken in 2002. The Rhenus AG & Co. KG was the lead company with several business lines:

  • Port Logistics (Full Service Provider sea and inland ports )
  • Public transport ( public transport )
  • Intermodal ( handling and transport of container traffic )

2006, the Rhenus AG took over the INTERSPE Hamann Group (IHG ) and thus had its European overland network and worldwide freight services. Other European warehouse locations were gained. Rhenus was thus an integrated European logistics service provider; With a sales increase of over 90 percent in Germany, the company climbed on in the Council trade and business magazine " logistics inside" ranking "Top 50 logistics providers in Germany 2007" by Rank 9 5th place

Had Rhenus AG & Co. KG 1 July 2007, the Transport Management International Holding BV ( TMI), headquartered in Hoofddorp (Netherlands) bought. TMI added in its Freight Logistics, the European network of Rhenus IHG, particularly in the Benelux countries, and brought more Contract Logistics facilities. In addition, management of TMI led by the expansion of international air and ocean freight business in the Rhenus Group.

TMI was in the Netherlands and Belgium with 35 locations and businesses Road Air Copex and Transmarcom to major logistics company and grew in recent years to around 400 million euros.

On 11 October 2007, the Rhenus PartnerShip GmbH & Co. KG, and with effect from 1 January 2008 50 per cent of the shares in Swintrans Bevrachting BV, Zwijndrecht (Netherlands). The Rhenus Group took over at the turn of 2007/2008 Hamann International GmbH Spedition Logistik, based in Hamburg. Hamann International was a trucking company with a focus on international land, sea and air freight. With this merger, the Rhenus Group has expanded its international freight logistics network in North Germany and strengthened in the area of ​​land, air and sea transport.

In September 2008, Dr. Hermann Niehues died after an accident. Klemens Rethmann became the new CEO.

2010 acquired a majority stake in the Rhenus per log group to compress its own network in Asia. Rhenus and the Port of Krems agree on a strategic partnership for the development of the Danube activities. The Thuringian Verlagsauslieferung (TVA ) in Gotha changed from the Langenscheidt Publishing Group in the possession of the Rhenus Medien Logistik. Rhenus took over the trucking companies Weckerle GmbH Spedition Logistik, IFS International Freight System Internationale Spedition GmbH and Grossmann Sea & Air logistics.

Rhenus 2011 signed a contract to take over the European activities of Wincanton Group and strengthened with the purchase of their lineup in contract logistics and multimodal transport. In the port of Rotterdam, the company acquired a 200,000 square meter deep-sea terminal. In Traben- Trarbach Rhenus bought the shipping company Wilh. Already GmbH & Co. KG. 2012 celebrated its 100th anniversary with Rhenus worldwide employee celebrations at the sites.
