Dunes Gazelle ( Gazella leptoceros )

The dunes Gazelle ( Gazella leptoceros ) is a species of gazelle ( Gazella genus ), which is now only regionally widespread in the Sahara.

Features

The dunes Gazelle reached a total length of 1.15 to 1.3 meters, of which 15 to 20 centimeters account for the tail. The shoulder height is 65 to 70 inches, weight 20 to 30 kg. It is characterized primarily by their extremely slender horns that measure the block 30 to 40 centimeters, as well as through their creamy white fur that is lighter than all other African species of gazelle. Other features are the indistinct face mark, the black, distal half of the tail and the much wider hooves that are intended to reduce sinking into the sand.

Distribution and population

The dunes Gazelle primarily inhabited sandy areas, but probably also penetrates into adjacent hill country before. She was originally widespread in North Africa. Recent deposits are detected only from Niger and Egypt, it is expected that kind also occur in some other parts of the sandy Sahara. From the northern and southern fringes of this desert dunes Gazelle has disappeared today. The total population is estimated at fewer than 2,500 adult animals. The IUCN classifies the dunes Gazelle as a " high risk " ( endangered ). In zoos the dunes Gazelle comes in Europe only in Planckendael.
