The state election in Rhineland- Palatinate in 1963 took place on March 31. The CDU lost its absolute majority, voluntary coalition with the FDP so far has continued. The SPD was the only opposition party in the parliament, because the DRP no longer made the way into the parliament.
Starting position
Notwithstanding the absolute majority of the CDU Minister-President Peter Altmeier had entered a black-yellow coalition with the FDP. Opposition parties in Parliament were the SPD and the DRP.
