History

Rhino was founded in 1973 by Richard Foos as a record store - opened - still in existence today. Four years later, Foos founded the label of the same name. After initial difficulties with the distribution, the label signed in 1986 a six-year distribution agreement with Capitol Records. 1989 Rhino acquired together with EMI Roulette Records and received it the licensing rights to the United States. When the sales contract with Capitol expired in 1992, Rhino signed a new one with WEA Records. In return, Time Warner bought a 50% stake in the record company, 1998, the other half, so that it holds Rhino to 100 %. In 1999, she developed " Rhino Handmade" with commercially available only on the Internet reissues in limited editions.

Through this merger, the label capable of compilations with Warner artists such as Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Yes, The Doobie Brothers, and to publish the The Doors, as well Filmsountracks of Warner Brothers, MGM ( until 1986 ) and RKO was films whose rights are also at Time Warner. These include Gone with the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, Easter Parade, North by Northwest, Casablanca, King Kong, Doctor Zhivago, and Superman.

Rhino has also acquired the rights to the Monkees by Columbia Pictures in the late 1980s.

2004 Rhino became part of the newly established Warner Music Group, as the parts of Time Warner after the spin-off of AOL (2003 ) to an investor group led by Edgar Bronfman jr. was sold.
