Rhizotrogus marginipes

Rhizotrogus marginipes

Rhizotrogus marginipes is a beetle of the family of scarab beetles (Scarabaeidae ). A unique common name is not usual for the type. He rarely referred to as June beetle, a name that is assigned but generally understood Amphimallon solstitiale and also occasionally for other representatives of both genera or even for the garden chafer ( Phyllopertha horticola ) can be found.

Features

The beetles reach a body length of 14 to 18 mm and have a variable staining. The pronotum is dark with reddish spots in the rule. The disc of the pronotum is densely and coarsely punctiform structured and hairy spreading, lie between the coarse finer points. The rest of the body is pale reddish yellow, the elytra seam and sometimes the edge of the top wing tips is colored narrow darker. There are also individuals with black markings or very dark specimens.

While Rhizotrogus marginipes barely visible stripes on the wing covers and a flat coat, has found in Amphimallon solstitiale long, arranged in rows eyelash bristles on the sides of the elytra. Often the neck -shield plate is divided in this dark and by a center line. Particularly striking is the long protruding hairs of the elytra ( elytra ), which is longer at the side edges.

Biology

The female lays about 30 eggs in the soil. This results in developing larvae, which are also called grubs. In this first stage of development they initially feed mostly from plant debris and small roots. After the larvae have wintered twice, they pupate and hatch depending on weather conditions in the early or late June. As imagines they eat the tissue of leaves and begin to reproduce. In cold early summers Junebug swarm out also on July evenings around sunset for an hour or two.
