Rhoecus

Rhoikos (Greek Ῥοῖκος ), the son of Phileus, Philaios or Phileas, was an architect and artist of Samos. He was probably born at the end of the 7th century BC and was the father of the architect Theodoros and Telecles.

Rhoikos and his grandson Theodoros of Samos are said to have revolutionized the technique of smelting bronze and cast as a first bronze statues. In the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus is a statue of Nyx said to have been found from the hand of Rhoikos. Together with Smilis and Theodoros it is called a builder of the labyrinth of Lemnos, which was supported by 150 columns.

Herodotus described Rhoikos as the first builders of Heraions of Samos. Today, however, assumes that Rhoikos built the second temple between about 580 and 560 BC. Maybe he previously visited the Egyptian Naucratis and was influenced by the levels of the local altar Aphrodite sanctuary. On the other hand shows the Apollon Temple of Naucratis, which was built around 550 BC, the Sami influence, so some researchers assume that Rhoikos was its architect. An East Greek eye cup, which bears a dedicatory inscription of a Rhoikos to Aphrodite, was found in Naucratis and is considered as further evidence for this assumption.
