Rhondda

Rhondda is a former coal mining area in South Wales, with about 59,900 inhabitants. The coal deposits were discovered in the mid -19th century. By railway lines in mines and ports ( Cardiff, Barry and Neath Port Talbot ), the agricultural region quickly developed into an industrial center and the population rose from 542 inhabitants in 1801 to 113,000 in 1901. After this time, however, decreased the demand of coal, which meant that the mines were closed, unemployment rose and people emigrated.
