Rhume

The Rhumewehr in Elvershausen

Template: Infobox River / Obsolete

The Rhume is about 48 km long right tributary of the line in the southern Lower Saxony ( Germany ).

Its source is one of the richest karst springs in Central Europe. Your water comes through subterranean flows from water-rich resin flows.

Rhumequelle

The Rhumequelle located in the eastern part of the ridge Rotenberg near the northeastern Ortsrands of Rhumspringe and is accessible from a parking lot in a few minutes.

Course

The Rhume flows according to their source by Rhumspringe and then mainly in northwestern directions south past the ridge of Red Mountain, among other things Gieboldehausen and Bilshausen to Lindau and Katlenburg. There she takes on the Oder, which is significantly longer, not only, but also carries more water, even though she has already lost underground large amounts of water to the Rhume. A few miles below receives the Rhume with the Söse another strong inflow from the resin. Finally, it opens slightly northwest of Northeim directly on the A 7 in the coming from the south line. It leads here with 16.5 m³ / s ( level Northeim ) annual mean significantly more water than the line ( 9.8 m³ / s).

Water

The Rhume is open all year with kayaks and canoes passable with constraints that can be borrowed, for example, near the sports field in Northeim. She has a good flow rate and has some small rapids on. However, a bulk in Katlenburg behind the road bridge is quite demanding. Here we see occasionally whitewater canoeists practicing. While the source area and the upper reaches of kilometers from 0 to 5.8 is all year round locked, the section must be 5.8 miles traveled to 9.0 between 15 May and 31 December.

Hydropower

In Northeim, the water of the Rhume is used to generate electricity in a hydroelectric power plant with 650 kW power. There are also smaller power plants in Elvershausen and Katlenburg.

Conservation

The floodplain on the Rhume provides endangered species such as garlic toad, natterjack toad and kingfisher habitat and has therefore been designated under the Habitats Directive as part of a protected area. The Rhume flows through the nature reserve Rhumeaue / Ellerniederung / Giller Heimer stream valley.
