Purpurbär ( Rhyparia purpurata )

The Purpurbär or Stachelbeerbär ( Rhyparia purpurata ) is a moth of the subfamily of the tiger moths ( Arctiinae ).

Features

The moths reach a wingspan of 40 to 50 millimeters. The front wings are golden brown and have black spots not completely opaque, so that the golden color shows through. Their hind wings are red, rarely yellow and have black spots. Your body is also golden yellow and black dots on the back run backwards. Around her head are hairy furry.

Occurrence

You are occurring throughout Europe, not only in the Far North, on the western Atlantic coast and parts of the Mediterranean region. They live in different areas, but prefer warm, moist places with knee- high vegetation. They fly from June to end of July.

Way of life

The animals are nocturnal, but do not appear until after midnight. Occasionally they come but also the day before.

Food

The caterpillars feed as various plants Clover, broom, sloe, bedstraw, raspberry, thistle or heather. They sit still very high on the plants.

Course of development

The females lay eggs in quite large, single clutches. The resulting hatching caterpillars overwinter and pupate in May or June of next year.
