About Li Hak -son, details about its origin and its sports development in North Korea is not known. In the international championships in which he participated between 1989 and 1993, he started getting in free style. At a size of 1.60 meters, it was very easy and initially began in the light flyweight, the weight category up to 48 kg and from 1992 in the flyweight weight class up to 52 kg body weight.

The first international championship in which he took part, was the Asia Cup in 1988 in Islamabad. He won there in the light flyweight before Kim Jong -shin from South Korea and Rahmaty Nadar from Iran. In 1989 he was at the World Championships in Martigny / Switzerland at the start. He finished there behind Kim Jong -shin 2nd place.

At the Asian Games in 1990 in Beijing, he was not used by the North Korean Wrestling Federation.

The next international championship he therefore denied again until 1992. He was in April this year in Tehran again champions of Asia, but flyweight. He pointed Majid Torkan from Iran, Kim Sun - hak of South Korea and Kazunari Shimizu from Japan to the places. He was also at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona at the start. There, he won the flyweight about Joe Oziti, Nigeria, Tserenbaatar Enkhbayar, Mongolia, Shane Stannett, New Zealand, Majid Torkan, Ahmet Orel, Turkey, the multiple world champion Valentin Yordanov Bulgaria and Larry Zeke Jones from the United States and thus became Olympic champion.

Li Hak -son suffered like all North Korean Ringer those years because his country several times international championships for political reasons boycotted (eg Asian Games 1986 in Seoul Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988, and various world championships).
