Riau Archipelago

The Riau Islands ( Kepulauan Riau Indonesian ) are an Indonesian archipelago off the east coast of Sumatra in the Malay Archipelago.

They form, together with the Lingga, the Anambas and the Natuna islands of the same name province of Riau Islands ( Kepulauan Riau Provinsi ).

Geography

The archipelago is located south of the Straits of Singapore in the transition of the South China Sea in the Straits of Malacca. North of the Riau Islands is located south of Singapore and the Lingga Islands.

The largest (and eastern ) island of the archipelago is 1866 km ² area Bintan, most populous island, with approximately 600,000 inhabitants, Batam. Other major islands in the West Karimun and Kundur off the coast of Sumatra. History

The islands belonged together with Temasek (Singapore ) for the Sultanate of Johor. At the beginning of the 19th century, the Netherlands competed with Britain and marginalized their influence from the British -Dutch Treaty of 1824: Singapore remained the British sphere assigned to the Riau Islands of the Netherlands. The islands were part of the kingdom of Riau Lingga and later taken over by the Dutch East India Company. With independence in 1949 they belong to Indonesia.
