Ribeira Sacra (DO)

Ribeira Sacra (Spanish: saint foreshore ) is a Spanish wine region in the northwestern region of Galicia and is close to the Portuguese border. Approximately 1217 ha bestockter vines ( as of 2006) lie at altitudes between 400 to 500 m maximum in a crescent-shaped area on both sides of the rivers Sil and Miño in the northwest of the province of Ourense and the southern part of the province of Lugo.

The vineyard is divided into five zones:

  • Chantada on the right bank of the Miño is the northernmost region.
  • Ribeiras do Miño on the left bank of the Miño closes immediately south of the zone Chantada.
  • Ribeiras do Sil - Ourense both sides of the river Sil.
  • Amandi along the Sil is located east of ribeiras do Sil - Ourense.
  • Quiroga - Bibei is the easternmost zone and lies on both sides of the Sil.

Since September 1997, the area has the status of a DO. The rules will be strictly controlled in general.

A total of 101 fill Bodegas from the wines of the 2880 Regional wines and market them. About 90 % of the production is destined for the domestic market.

The climate

While the zones are mainly influenced atlantic on Miño, the subzones of the Sil have a much more continental climate. In terraced vineyards with a southwesterly direction a microclimate with Mediterranean character.

The wines

Within the vineyard all wine types are permitted. International efforts are being made to exploit the fame of white Godello grape variety, which had almost disappeared by phylloxera. The sparkling wines of this rare species here have some significance, although the quality of the variety is not used optimally. Other white varieties Albariño, Doña Blanca, Treixadura, Loureira and Torrontés. Overall, make the white wines max. 5 % of the total production quantity. The red wines are vinified almost exclusively from the variety Mencia and partially blended with Brancellao and Merenzao. In addition, however, the varieties Tempranillo, Caiño and Sousón are grown. The variety Mencia occupies almost 86% of the area under vines in the area.

The regulatory authority

Compliance with the production rules are monitored by the local regulator, the Regulatory Board.
