Ribeiro (DO)

Ribeiro ( Galician for " foreshore ") is a Spanish wine region in the northwestern region of Galicia and is close to the Portuguese border. Around 2685 hectares under vines ( as of 2005) lie on both sides in a triangular area in flat positions and slopes 75-400 m of the Rio Miño and its tributaries Avia, Arnoia and Barbantiño in the northwest of the province of Ourense.

The wine region is divided among the 13 municipalities Ribadavia, Arnoia Castrelo de Miño, Carballeda de Avia, Leiro, Cenlle, Beade, Punxín and Cortegada and parts of the municipalities Boborás, San Amaro, Toén, Carballiño and Ourense.

Often the wine region in the subzones Ribeiro de Avia, Ribeiro del Miño and Ribeiro de Arnoia is divided.

Since July 1957, the area has the status of a DO The rules will be strictly controlled in general.

A total of 109 fill Bodegas from the wines of the 5983 Regional wines and market them. About 90 % of the production is destined for the domestic market.

The climate

The climate of the Miño is mainly influenced atlantic. Winters are cold, the summer, however warm, so a fairly high average annual temperature of 14.5 ° C is determined. The annual rainfall is an average of 950 mm. The sun shines approximately 1915 hours / year. Almost 40 % of this amount alone accounts for the months of July and August.

The wines

The area provides primarily produce white wines. Most important varieties are the Trajadura ( herein called Treixadura ) and Torrontés. Other white varieties Albariño, Albilla, Godello, Loureira, Macabeo and Palomino. In the experimental stage are plantings of the variety IADO. Overall, whites make up almost 90 % of the total production volume.

The red wines are vinified primarily from the varieties Sousón, Brancellao, Caiño, Ferrón and Mencia. Addition, however, the Garnacha Tinta and Tempranillo are grown.
