Ribemont

Ribemont is a commune with 1961 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Aisne in the Picardie region; it belongs to the arrondissement of Saint- Quentin and is capital of the canton Ribemont.

Geography

The city is situated on the left bank of the river Oise, as well as on parallel Sambre -Oise Canal, approximately 15 kilometers southeast of Saint- Quentin.

History

In the year 880 met in Ribemont the Carolingian Louis the Younger ( eastern kingdom ), Ludwig III. and Carloman ( western France ) to sign the Treaty of Ribemont, with the division of the Frankish empire was committed. A second Treaty of Ribemont was closed in 1178, when the sons of the Duke of Lorraine I. Matthew decided the division of the inheritance.

From the 11th century Ribemont was owned by the Counts of Ostervant and came by marriage to the Moy family.

Demographics

Ribemont belongs to the medium-sized communities in the department of Aisne. Since the 1960s, the population numbers only minor fluctuations.
