Ribnik, Croatia

Ribnik to 1918 Riburg, is a small Croatian town of Karlovac, Central Croatia, not far from the Slovenian border (border crossing Jurovski Brod - Metlika ).

In Ribnik is a former water castle, which was built by the Croatian royal family of Babonić, Károly Róbert in the 13th century. The famous noble families and the owners were Mikac to the 14th century. In the property of Francopan it was 1394. Starting in 1576 it fell to the Zrinski family. From 1702 to 1809 it had the family Petazzi. In 1839, acquired Joseph Philipp Vukasović, builder of Luis Street ( Town Skrad near Delnice ), possession. In 1858 it was purchased by Josip Gal.

The castle is situated in the valley of the brook Obvrh, which was dammed up, so that a large fish pond was created. The castle was within the island via a drawbridge. The still visible portion of the defensive tower with the arms of Francopan was originally very high. In the castle you can still very well admire the impressive architecture of Gothic and Renaissance due to the permanent owner.

The former town Lipnik, today Ribnik existed before the 13th century. Landowners to Ribnik were: just to name Nikola Zrinski, Gašpar Colarić, Gregory Vlahovic and the noble families Sturmberger, Lenković, Zrinjski few.

Already in 1418 the municipality had 25 villages with 4,784 inhabitants. Engraved this is in the church bell of Ribnik. However, since the way to Ribnik for many was too far, for example, was by the residents of Bubnjarci in the near Metlika attended the Holy Mass in the Krain.

One of the key roles in the spread of Protestantism in the 16th century in northern Croatia had the Lutheran and Calvinist preacher. The Croatian theologian and politician Juraj Križanić was born in 1618 in Obvrh at Ribnik.
