Ricardo Martinelli

Ricardo Alberto Martinelli Berrocal ( born March 11, 1952 in Panama City, Panama ) is a Panamanian politician and entrepreneur. On 3 May 2009 he won the presidential elections in Panama and was sworn in on July 1 as president.

Life

Martinelli is the son of Ricardo Martinelli Pardini and Gloria Berrocal. After his education at the Staunton Military Academy in Staunton, Virginia ( United States), he studied at the University of Arkansas. There he earned a bachelor's degree in economics. He then studied at the INCAE Business School, where he reached the master. Martinelli is married to Marta Linares and has three children. He is the CEO of the company Súper 99, a retail chain in Panama.

Martinelli is chairman of the political party Cambio Democratico. On 3 May 2009 he won with 60 percent of the vote, the presidential elections in Panama against the politician Balbina Herrera. The central election issue was the good five -billion dollar expansion of the Panama Canal, which is for the country of utmost importance. On 1 July 2009 he was sworn in as president.
