Ricardo Williams (boxer)

Ricardo Williams ( born June 25, 1981 in Cincinnati, Ohio ) is a retired American boxer.

Amateur

Southpaw Williams won the 1998 National Golden Gloves and was U.S. champion in 1998 and 1999 in the light welterweight. In the amateur world championships in 1999 in Houston, he failed in the second round of the tournament at Mahamadkadir Abdullaev from Uzbekistan.

In 2000 he qualified for participation in the Olympic Games in Sydney and won the silver medal there. In his semi-final victory over the Cubans Diógenes Luna is one of the most spectacular fights of the tournament. In the final he was then, however again inferior to the Uzbeks Abdullayev.

Professional

2001 Williams became a professional. He was engaged by Lou DiBella, received a multi-million dollar bonus (1.4 million U.S. dollars ) for the signing of the contract and a lot of advance praise. But just as with Abdullayev and the acclaimed Mexican Francisco Bojado he had no success in the professional business, which was attributed in the U.S. his laziness and drug problems.
