Riccardo Giovanelli

Riccardo Giovanelli ( born August 30, 1946 in Gattatico, Reggio Emilia ) is an Italian astronomer who works in the field of radio and radar astronomy.

Life

In 1976 he received his Ph.D. at Indiana University. Henry Draper Medal him the National Academy of Sciences was awarded in 1989. He currently teaches as a professor of astronomy at Cornell University.

Research

Giovanelli interest is in observational cosmology. Here he explores galaxies, in particular their structure, development and environment. In the 1980s, Giovanelli examined the structures of the visible universe by measuring the redshift of distant galaxies. He was awarded, together with Martha P. Haynes for mapping and the creation of the first three-dimensional model of the visible universe, the Henry Draper Medal in 1989. He is currently investigating ways to determine the distance of galaxies without measuring the redshift. Other research areas of his work are the structure of galaxy clusters, the determination of cosmological parameters and the properties pekuliarer velocity fields in the universe. His last investigation showed that the velocity changes between dense and less dense regions of the universe to be lower than expected.
