Rice Lake (Ontario)

Rice Lake is a lake in the southeast of the Canadian province of Ontario.

The lake is located south of the city of Peterborough and north of Cobourg. The lake is part of the Trent -Severn Waterway. This runs from the Georgian Bay of Lake Huron on the Kawartha Lakes and the Otonabee River at Rice Lake and the Trent River on to Lake Ontario.

The Rice Lake has a length of 37 km and a width of 4.8 km. The natives called the lake " Pemadashdakota " ( " lake of burning plains ").

A drumlin field extends to the northwest of the lake. Some of the islands in Rice Lake represent partially submerged drumlins

The Rice Lake shares the Oak Ridges Moraine by three wedges in the West ( Albion, Uxbridge and Pontypool ), as well as a wedge in the east ( Rice Lake ), which finds its end in the Trent River. A narrow corridor south of Rice Lake connects these wedges.

The lake is quite shallow. He was named after the rice water, which formerly grew in the lake and was harvested by the indigenous people of the area. Much of the original in the lake widespread water rice disappeared when the water level was raised due to the construction work for the construction of the waterway.

The town of Bewdley situated at the western end of the lake. The city of Hastings is located on the eastern shore of the lake.

Prehistoric grave mounds were discovered in the Serpent Mounds Park on the north shore of Rice Lake. Additional points of interest on the lake form the Indian reservations of Alder Ville and Hiawatha First Nations. Other cities on the lake are Roseneath, Bailieboro, Gores Landing and Harwood.

The Cobourg and Peterborough Railway was completed in 1854. She crossed the Rice Lake from Harwood Hiawatha. The heavy ice floes of the lake in winter damaged the bridge so strong that the driving was adjusted within six years. Sections of the railway line are at the lake can still be seen.

In the late 19th century, a passenger steamship sailed the lake.

Rice Lake is a famous tourist destination and popular with anglers. A fishing competition is held annually at Rice Lake. In the lake are, inter alia, following fish caught: walleye, muskellunge, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, American perch, crappie and sunfish.
