Rice tenrec

The rice hustler ( Oryzorictes ), sometimes referred to as Maulwurftenreks are a mammalian genus from the group of Reistenreks within the family of tenrecs ( Tenrecidae ). They are endemic to Madagascar.

Features

These animals are adapted to a grave lifestyle, and have in their Body similarities with the moles on. The toes of the front feet are provided with grave claws, with which they create underground passages. Their fur is colored light gray on the top gray-brown or dark brown and at the bottom. The short compared to the other Reistenreks tail is also in two colors. Rice Wühler reach head hull lengths from 8.5 to 13 centimeters, which must be added a 3 to 5 centimeters long tail comes. The weight varies - if known - between 30 and 50 grams.

Way of life

Rice Burrows owe their name to the fact that they are often found near rice fields, but they also live in wetlands. To perform a partly underground lifestyle and create a mole similar courses. They also sometimes destroy the dams of the rice fields.

They are considered nocturnal, although observations are difficult due to its retracted lifestyle, and feed primarily on insects and molluscs.

System

Today, two types are distinguished:

  • The Actual rice hustler ( Oryzorictes Jehovah ) is native to central and northern Madagascar and is considered frequently. The earlier than self- guided nature Oryzorictes talpoides is now attributed to this species.
  • The Four-toed Rice Burrows ( Oryzorictes tetradactylus ) differs by a rougher coat and a lower number of front feet toes ( four instead of five like the authentics rice Wühler ) of this. He lives in northern Madagascar, its conservation status is unclear.
