Japanese medaka ( Oryzias latipes )

The rice fish ( Adrianichthyidae ), also called Asian lampeyes, are a family of freshwater fish belonging to the order of the Garfish -like ( Beloniformes ). They live in fresh and brackish waters from India to Indonesia, north to Japan.

Features

There are bright, relatively colorless four to eight inches large fish of the upper water regions. What is striking is the large anal fin. A lateral line is absent, as the vomer, the external pterygoid ( Ectopterygoid ) Metapterygoid and Supracleithrum ( a bone of the shoulder girdle ). The nostrils are paired. The number of Branchiostegalstrahlen is four to seven.

System

The rice fish are at the origin of the family tree of the Garfish -like ( Beloniformes ) and look after their figure of the sister group of the Garfish -like the Zahnkärpflingen ( Cyprinodontiformes ) similar. There are about 30 species in two genera and two subfamilies. The subfamilies were performed in older classifications the rank of independent families.
