Richard Adler

Richard Adler ( born August 3, 1921 in New York City, New York, † June 21, 2012 in Southampton, New York) was an American composer and songwriter.

Life

Richard Adler's musicality was paid to him by his father, who was a concert pianist, in the cradle. But He originally aspired to no musical career; he wanted to be a writer. After he had completed his studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he worked as a copywriter.

Leading the way for Richard Adler's career was the acquaintance and friendship with the subsequent three years younger Jerry Ross, as well as the composer and publisher Frank Loesser. The latter realized what talent lay dormant in the two young men and promoted them as best he could. Henceforth, composed and texteten Ross and Adler together. In 1953, they ended up with the song Rages To Riches their first big hit. The big time but scored the composer and author team in 1954 with his first musical The Pajama Game, which came on Broadway in his first season on 1063 performances and several Tony Awards reaped. The piece was still running successfully, as Ross and Adler were already with her second musical Damn Yankees, which reached 1022 repeat performances, a year later their sensational success. But that already ended both cooperation because Ross became seriously ill and died on 11 November 1955 at the age of 29 from pneumonia.

After the death of his partner Adler wrote many tunes and lyrics for musicals, which were shown exclusively on American television. However, in October 1961, he returned with Kwamina back to Broadway. In the history of the musical, it was the first time that a love story between a black man and a white woman came on stage. The big success was the work but failed. It became clear that without Ross Adler could not provide the service that had been expected of him.

Richard Adler in 1984 was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. From 1958 to 1966 he was married to British actress Sally Ann Howes.
