Richard B. Ogilvie

Richard Buell Ogilvie ( born February 22, 1923 in Kansas City, Missouri, † 10 May 1988 in Chicago, Illinois ) was an American politician and from 1969 to 1973 the 35th Governor of Illinois.

Early years and political rise

After primary school, Ogilvie participated in a tank unit in the Second World War. Subsequently, he studied until 1947 at Yale University. It was followed by a law degree from Chicago Kent College, which he successfully completed in 1949. After that, he was active in Chicago as a lawyer. His political rise began in 1954. At that time he was deputy attorney general. He remained in this position until 1955. Between 1958 and 1961 he worked for the U.S. Department of Justice with the special mission to fight organized crime in Chicago. In this capacity, he also raised some accusations against leading gangster sizes. From 1963 to 1967 he was sheriff in Cook County. In 1968 he was appointed by the Republican Party to its candidates for the forthcoming gubernatorial election.

Governor of Illinois

After his narrow election victory over incumbent Samuel Shapiro Ogilvie began his four -year term on 13 January 1969. During his tenure, many new facilities were created in Illinois including, among others, were committees to improve environmental protection, social policy, human rights, and the housing situation in some areas of the country.
