Richard Bonynge

Richard Alan Bonynge AC, CBE ( born September 29, 1930 in Sydney ) is an Australian conductor.

Life

Bonynge, who began playing the piano at the age of five years, studied piano at the Conservatory of Music at Lindley Evans, a former accompanist of the legendary Nellie Melba.

As a coach at the opera class of the Institute, he met his future wife there Joan Sutherland know. Together, the two went to London, where he continued his studies at the Royal College of Music. In 1954 she got married. 1956 their son was born.

After the singing career of Joan Sutherland had begun in 1959, both determined from the mid- 1960s - first at concerts, opera performances and later recordings - work exclusively as a singer and conductor. His conducting debut was in 1962, when he had to replace the sudden illness conductor at a concert of his wife. Bonynge was artistic director of the opera in Vancouver (1974-1978) and led from 1976 ( to 1986 ), the Australian Opera in Sydney as music director. Guest performances, first with his wife, after their farewell stage alone, Bonynge led in all musical centers of the world.

Importance

In the years from 1960 to the present, Richard Bonynge became one of the most prestigious and important conductors and experts in the field of bel canto opera and the French repertoire worldwide. He was a pioneer in the rediscovery of forgotten works of Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, Massenet and others responsible for the repertoire. Together with his wife, he mainly played the rarest works " Esclarmonde " ( Massenet ), " Le Roi de Lahore " ( Massenet ), " Semiramide " ( Rossini ) and many others. His discography is accordingly extensive. It comprises over 50 opera recordings, numerous ballets and a large number of recital recordings with various singers.
