Richard C. Byrd

Richard C. Byrd (* 1805 in Hawkins County, Tennessee, † June 1, 1854 in Jefferson County, Arkansas ) was an American politician (Democratic Party), and in 1849 Governor of Arkansas.

Early years and political rise

The exact date of birth of Richard Byrd is unknown. However, the sources start from the year 1805. In 1826 he came as farmers and traders in the Arkansas Territory. From 1829 to 1831 he worked as an auditor in the area. In 1833 he became a member of the Territorial Parliament and in 1836 he was elected to the House of Representatives from Arkansas. Between 1840 and 1848 he was with some interruptions in the State Senate; In 1844 he competed unsuccessfully for the office of governor.

Governor of Arkansas

As the incumbent Governor Thomas Stevenson Drew resigned on January 10, 1849, Richard Byrd had provisionally administer than Senate President whose term of office. His only task was to call a new election for the office of governor. This took place on 14 March 1849. On April 19 of that year, the newly elected Governor John Selden Roane was inaugurated. This Byrds ended short term.

Byrd now retired from politics. He went to Jefferson County to his business interests and died in 1854.
