Richard C. Sarafian

Richard C. Sarafian ( born April 28, 1930 in New York City; † September 18, 2013 ) was an American film director, actor, screenwriter and film producer.

Life and work

His debut as a director, he was in 1961 with the production of an episode of the television series Maverick. It was followed by numerous works for television, in 1962 he turned with The Outlaws of the Rio Grande his first feature film.

In 1954 he wrote his first screenplay for a film version of Attila.

His last film as a director was Starfire of 1990, he had published under the pseudonym Alan Smithee, because he was not satisfied with the cut.

Sarafian was with Joan Altman, sister of Robert Altman, married. They had five children; the four sons are all active in the film business. The most famous is the director Deran Sarafian.
