Richard Cushing

Richard James Cardinal Cushing ( born August 24, 1895 in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, † November 2, 1970 ibid ) was Archbishop of Boston.

Life

Born in Boston's South Boston Richard Cushing received his philosophical and theological education in Boston and Brighton. He received on 26 May 1921, the sacrament of Holy Orders, and then worked as a pastor in the Archdiocese of Boston. From 1922 to 1929 he was Deputy Director, 1929-1944 Director of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith.

1939 Cushing was appointed Titular Bishop of Mela and Auxiliary Bishop of Boston. He received his episcopal consecration William Henry Cardinal O'Connell on 29 June 1939. Were co-consecrators the Bishop of Manchester, John Bertram Peterson, and the Vicar Apostolic of Jamaica, Thomas Addis Emmet, SJ.

On 25 September 1944, he was named by Pope Pius XII. Archbishop of Boston. Pope John XXIII. took him on 15 December 1958 as cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Susanna on the College of Cardinals.

Richard Cardinal Cushing took part in the years 1962-1965 at the Second Vatican Council. In 1963, he led the funeral of assassinated U.S. President John F. Kennedy. In 1965, he consecrated as Papal legate of the Cathedral of Galway in Ireland. The management of the Archdiocese of Boston, he stepped down due to illness, on September 8, 1970. He died on 2 November 1970 and was buried in the chapel of Colette School.
