Richard Heuberger

Richard Franz Joseph Heuberger the Elder ( born June 18, 1850 in Graz, † October 28, 1914 in Vienna) was an Austrian composer, conductor, music educator and music journalist.

Life

After leaving school, he began his professional career in the field of engineering, decided at the age of 27 years, but for a change in the music. He studied at the Conservatory in Graz and was assigned after successful completion in 1902 with the leadership of the Academic Choral Society in Vienna. Later Heuberger also took over the director of the Vienna Academy of Music. From 1902 he also taught at the Conservatory of the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna.

Richard Heuberger also became known as the music critic of different newspapers a name, first at the " Neues Wiener Tageblatt ", then from 1899 in the " Allgemeine Zeitung " ( Munich). In 1896, he became the successor Eduard Hanslick as a music critic for the Vienna Neue Freie Presse. The same time he worked as a freelance journalist and editor, including the "New Musical Press ", works. He died in Vienna in 1914 and is buried in the back Brühl.

His compositional output includes operas, ballets, operettas, songs, choruses, and other instrumental compositions. As his most famous work applies the operetta The Opera Ball ( libretto by Victor Léon ).

1955 Heubergergasse in Vienna Hietzing was named in his honor. 1956 his grave was converted into a memorial grave at the cemetery Hinterbrühler.

The historian Richard Heuberger the Younger was his son.
