Richard James Horatio Gottheil

Richard James Horatio Gottheil ( born October 13, 1862 in Manchester, † May 22, 1936 in New York) was an American semitist and Professor of Rabbinic Literature.

Life and work

When he was eleven years old, his father received, Rabbi Gustav Gottheil, a job as assistant rabbi at the largest Reform Temple in New York (Temple Emanu -El ), so the family moved to the United States. Studied at Gottheil in both the U.S. and Europe. In 1886 he was at the University of Leipzig as a result of philological edition study ( Mâr Elia of Sobha: A treatise on Syriac grammar ) Dr. phil. doctorate. In the same year he was appointed New York's Columbia University Professor of Rabbinic Literature. Since 1896, he served as Director of the Oriental Department of the New York Public Library.

Gottheil was one of the first American Zionists. In 1898 he was elected the first President of the Federation of American Zionists. He was Reform rabbi and a member of the Action Committee of the World Zionist Organization.

Between God and salvation Theodor Herzl, a close friendship developed.
