Richard Neville, 5th Earl of Salisbury

Richard Neville, jure uxoris 5th Earl of Salisbury, KG, PC ( * 1400 in Raby Castle ( Durham ), † December 31, 1460 ) was a leader of the Yorkists in the beginnings of the Wars of the Roses.

Life

Richard was the third son ( the tenth child) of Ralph Neville, 1st Earl of Westmorland, and the first child of his second wife, Joan Beaufort. The possessions of the Neville were located primarily in Durham and Yorkshire, but the kings Richard II and Henry IV of England saw the family as a useful counterbalance to the power of Percies on the Scottish border, resulting in Ralph's 1397 title conferred and his appointment as Lord Warden of the Marches in 1403 founded.
