Richard Schmidt (rower)

Richard Schmidt ( * May 23, 1987 in Trier ) is a German sweep rowers. 2009, 2010 and 2011, he was world champion in the eighth. In addition, he is since the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London reigning Olympic champion in rowing eight.

Sports career

Richard Schmidt is rowing for the RV Treviris 1921 eV Trier. Since 2004, he won medals at junior level.

In 2007 he started in Ottenheim first time in a World Cup. In the same year he won jointly with Sebastian Schmidt, Focke Beckmann and Kristof Wilke the coxless four at the U23 World Championships. In the autumn of the year, the team took second place at the European Championships.

2008 Schmidt started with Beckmann at the World Cup opener in Munich in the coxless pairs and was nominated at the end of the season for the German eighth at the U23 World Championships, with whom he came fourth.

In the course of short-term reshuffle of Germany rowing eight before the Olympic Games Schmidt was also nominated as a substitute for Beijing. He moved with Marco Neumann for the semi-finals to Gregor Hauffe and Urs buyers in the coxless four, as Filip Adamski, Toni Seifert and were ill. The newly constituted team reached the finals surprisingly, there had to be replaced by Neumann but, again, Jochen Urban, the boat finished in sixth and last place.

A year later formed the nucleus of this quad new Germany rowing eight, with the Schmidt also won the title at the World Rowing Championships 2009. In 2010 he was the first time German champion in pairs without coxswain together with Kristof Wilke. In the 2012 Olympics he won the gold medal in London with the aft Germany.

The World Rowing Championships in 2013 he won a silver medal, behind the United Kingdom and ahead of the United States.
