Richard Smith (English guitarist)

Richard Smith ( born December 12, 1971 in Beckenham, England ) is an English fingerstyle guitarist. His focus lies on the tradition American country guitarists like Merle Travis, Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed.

The age of five learned Smith the fingerpicking on the guitar by his father. At the age of eleven he was taken at a concert at London's Her Majesty's Theatre by Chet Atkins on stage and impressed them and the audience very much.

In 1999, he moved to Nashville in the U.S. state of Tennessee, where he founded including the Hot Club of Nashville, an ensemble that moved stylistically between American Western swing and European Gypsy Jazz. Lately Richard Smith occurs either on solo or together with his wife, the US-American and classical cellist Julie Adams.

Richard Smith switches effortlessly between fingerpicking and flatpicking. His technical playing skills on the acoustic guitar has earned him several awards and accolades.
