Richard Specht

Richard Specht ( born December 7, 1870 in Vienna, † March 19, 1932 ) was an Austrian poet, dramatist, writer, music critic and musicologist.

Life

Richard Specht was born into a Jewish family, he was the son of Ladislaus Specht, a textile merchant, and Pauline, born cow. He was taught together with his brothers by Rudolf Steiner, mystics, philosopher and founder of anthroposophy as a private tutor. He studied piano and music theory from 1887 and four semesters of architecture at the Technische Hochschule in Vienna, but was then first commercially active.

However, his interest was in the literature; as a poet and dramatist, he was one of the writers circle "Young Vienna " and was a member of the Arbeiter-Zeitung in Vienna, but also wrote for the Berlin stock exchange Courier and published articles in the Neue Freie Presse and in the Pester Lloyd.

Under the influence of Brahms, howler ( a maternal relatives ) and Goldmark, he became increasingly interested in music and worked as a music critic for the Wiener Allgemeine Zeitung, the Illustrated Vienna Special Edition and Zeit. From 1908 he worked for the Wiener Zeitschrift für Musik. In 1909 he founded, together with Richard Batka the influential, semi -monthly, music magazine The flag, which he headed until 1919 with Batka and then with Julius Bittner. 1914-20 he was editor of the program booklets of the subscription concerts of the Vienna Philharmonic. From 1920 Woodpecker worked as a freelance writer, has given numerous lectures on the radio and lectures on literature and aesthetics at the New Vienna Conservatory.

In 1925 he was appointed professor at the Vienna Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.

Woodpecker is best known for his writings on classical music and was known in his time as one of the leading music publishers. New friends, he was, inter alia, with Arthur Schnitzler. He was involved relevant to the music of Gustav Mahler and was one of the regular guests in the Salon of Mahler's widow, Alma Mahler -Werfel.

Specht was married three times: in 1912 with pianist Vera Schapira ( 1891-1930 ), from 1920 with Wanda Maria Halban ( 1894-1986 ), the niece of gynecologists Josef von Halban, from 1927 to actress Alexandrine Pagin ( 1894-1953 ).

His honorary devoted grave is on Grinzing Cemetery (Group 13, Series 2, No. 7).
