Richard Spink Bowles

Richard Spink Bowles, QC ( born November 16, 1912 in Winnipeg, † July 9, 1988 ) was a Canadian lawyer. From 1965 to 1970 he acted as vice- governor of the province of Manitoba.

Biography

Bowles, the son of a dentist, studied law at the University of Manitoba. From 1937 he practiced as a lawyer in Winnipeg and opened there three years later his own law firm. In addition to his professional activities, he became involved in various organizations. In 1952, he became the first president of the Winnipeg Home and School Association from 1956 to 1957 he was chairman of the Commission for urban parks and recreational facilities. From 1961 he was president of the Bar Association of Manitoba, from 1964 to 1965 and president of the law society of the province.

Governor General Georges Vanier sworn Bowles on September 1, 1965 as Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba. This representative office he held until 2 September 1970. After James Duncan McGregor he was only the second incumbent, who had previously held had no political office. Both the University of Manitoba and the University of Winnipeg, distinguished him for his achievements with an honorary doctorate. Bowles ran unsuccessfully in the 1972 general election for the Liberal Party in the constituency Lisgar.
