Richard Tee

Richard Tee (* November 24, 1943 in New York City, NY, USA, † 21 July 1993 ) was an American pianist, organist and arranger.

Life and work

Richard Tee received in his youth for 12 years a classical music education, including at the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in New York. After this training, he was hired by Motown Records in Detroit as " house pianist " and worked his way up to a salaried arranger.

After his return to New York he worked as a studio musician, both on the piano and on the Hammond organ, among other things with Bob James, Aretha Franklin, Herbie Mann, Grover Washington Jr., Roland Kirk, Hank Crawford, James Brown, Peter Gabriel, Chaka Khan and Joe Cocker together.

The most popular photos by Richard tea come from his long-standing collaboration with Paul Simon. Piano Voices from Bridge over Troubled Water or Still Crazy After All These Years were played by Richard Tee.

He was not only a studio musician, but also a live pianist. Richard Tee accompanied, for example, Paul Simon both his Rhythm -of-the -Saints - tour as well at the concert in Central Park. Also in the Paul Simon Unplugged band sat Richard Tee on piano.

His piano style was influenced by R & B, funk and soul music from the 70s, where he could decorate especially in the quieter pieces, with a large proportion of this Gospel. But his very special trademark was an independent Fender Rhodes sound he created with the help of a phaser.

Richard Tee died on 21 July 1993 in Bronx to prostate cancer.
